Kate Spencer

I am a fabric artist, creating miniature patchwork quilts. As stone speaks to sculptors, fabrics speak to me, their colors and designs demanding I help them discover what kind of quilt they want to be. I come by this passion honestly, being descended from three generations of quilters. However, unlike my beloved predecessors whose quilts were beautiful bed coverings, I use the tools of traditional patchwork--geometry and color--to create one-of-a-kind wall hangings or table runners.

Unlike most modern art quilters, I choose to quilt by hand, using contrasting thread and carefully chosen patterns which sometimes complement the lines of the piecing and sometimes contrast with it, to add further complexity to the design. Also unlike most art quilters, I prefer to avoid representational images or social commentary. In a world of controversy and tumult, my art offers simple beauty to soothe frazzled spirits and invite peaceful contemplation.
